When you stay with us in Youlgrave, you can do as much or as little as you like. The village is very popular with walkers and cyclists who flock to beautiful Bradford Dale. There is plenty of local history to be discovered, including the 12th Century font in the village church. You will find the locals very welcoming and more than happy to talk about village life.
There are museums, shops and other activities such as pony trekking and steam train rides, all to be found within 10-15 minutes of the cottage.

Youlgrave or Youlgreave

Both spellings of the village are common, the latter being the one most commonly seen on road signs, whilst the fore is the popular local spelling. The name is thought to derive from 'Yellow Grove'. Yellow being the colour of the ore mined from the limestone hills since Roman times and 'Grove' being an old term for a mine.
Youlgrave was recorded in the doomsday book of 1086 as Giolgrave but research by a local historian has shown there to be over 60 different spellings!
During your stay, you will most probably here the village referred to as it's nickname 'Pommie'. This is thought to originate from the sound of the original brass band which was less tuneful than today and just consisted of a pom, pom, pom.

Youlgrave Water Works Ltd

The village is the only place in Britain to still produce and manage its own water supply. The original Fountain or Conduit Head dates back to 1829 and still stands proudly in the centre of the village. Once upon a time the women of the village would bucket water up the hill from the springs at Bradford Dale and store it in the fountain for collection each morning by the residents. Later, pipework and taps were installed around the village and people would go and collect their water ration. One of these early taps can be found in the dry stone wall opposite the cottage. Youlgrave Waterworks may now have established a supply to each home, but the source remains the same.

Youlgrave Village Traditions

Youlgrave not only prides itself on being a village steeped in history, but also on its strong sense of community. The community welcomes tourism and everyone will stop for a chat.
The village even invites holiday makers to join them in the production of their well dressings at the end of June.
Each year, Pommie holds its own Carnival, with the crowning of its very own Carnival Queen. Themed floats are produced
and paraded through the village. Our facebook page has photos and the video of this years Carnival procession.
The village also puts on a Christmas pantomime.
